When I first heard this while in the
Late Plate (it's a brilliant cafe in NUS, will blog about it soon!), I remarked to Bryan "
Hey, I've heard this before... hey this is The Xx's Angels! But I know the words too, how come?"
I found out the song name from googling part of the lyrics which I caught, with the search enquiry "the xx angels remix hanging on the passenger side trying to holler at me", and I got the name of the song! Thank you Google
But still, I couldn't figure out from where I had heard the song, because I'd never listened to TLC's
No Scrubs before, hence I definitely would have known the lyrics from a remix somewhere...
I then searched "Bastille Mini mix no scrubs" because I thought I'd heard it in a remix somewhere, and for me to remember just a snippet it most probably came from a mini mix (Annie Mac's show, do catch it if you love grime, drum&bass, bass in generally, trap etc.), and I found Freddy Verano's remix of the song, which wasn't what I'd heard before.
Feeling a bit disappointed, but not giving up, I thought I might have heard the song on MK's essential mix, so I decided to google "MK essential mix TLC No scrubs" and was led to this
website, where they talked about Le Youth having sampled TLC's
No Scrubs for his track
Dance With Me, and I realised I had heard the song from MK's remix of Le Youth's track in MK's essential mix!
VICTORY!!!!! I just
had to know. Listening to music is so fun, people do covers and sample iconic music all the time - is this an instance of
intertextuality? :D Hahahaahahahhaha.
Anyway, this track is brilliant. Do listen to it (by it I mean, Bastille's cover of
No Scrubs and
Angels)!
Check out MK's remix of Le Youth's
Dance With Me if you're interested, it's a bit more dance-y and edgy, with random bits of... I don't even know how to describe it, but it's just different from Bastille's cover, definitely more house-y:
