Rouse Cafe @ Dunlop Street + a bit on Race

Breaking the at-least-one-month-late rule to blog about today's happenings because that's how happy I am today and that's how much I want to blog about it (this is such an awkward/bad sentence structure that I don't even know how to salvage it BUT EVS).

Went out to Little India with Mrs Twit today!  Technically, it's yesterday, because it's already 0225hrs. (I gave up and fell asleep after my eyes got too dry.  SO SUE ME)

I'd never actually walked around in Little India before - besides going to Swee Choon to eat - so I really enjoyed walking past all the custom-made tailor shops and spice shops; especially the spice shops, because the smells wafting of them were amazingly fragrant and saliva-glands activating (doesn't sound too sexy but I really wanted to buy some spice pastes to cook something!).

Our hangout of the day was Rouse Cafe.

Huda got herself a Open-faced Roast Beef Sandwich ($16.90).  She let me have a bite of the beef; it was tender and well seasoned!

I got myself a Crabby Patty ($17.90), which had a delightfully refreshing mango salsa on the top and a house salad on the side.  The house salad is basically romaine lettuce and cherry tomatoes, but the romaine they used was extremely crunchy and fresh.  I almost enjoyed the salad more than the crab patty itself, but the crab patty is really yummy too, with lots of herbs and a tinge of heat from chopped chilies!

I also got myself an Iced Chocolate ($6.50) but I didn't think it tasted fabulous.  I quite like the vibes of the place thou, can see myself heading back!  Plus the portions are worth the money.  However, during our meal, we realised that there were ants crawling beneath the glass surface of the table (there's space between the glass and the wooded part of the table), so that kinda freaked us out a bit.  It's not nice to see ants crawling about so close to your meal even if they aren't actually touching your food!  Hopefully they do something about that!

OHHHHHH I genuinely like the cafe's playlist as well!  It was really odd in the beginning because when I first entered, it was kinda hipster indie music.  But then they played like really hard techno, of which there were a few tracks I actually knew?!?  One being this:

Almost broke into my techno pumps but Huda begged me not to embarrass her.  They also played some house tracks and it was just really enjoyable!  No bossa nova.  I can't stand bossa nova.  We really liked this track in particular:

They're located at 36 Dunlop Street, and closed on Tuesdays if you're interested in going!  Opening hours are

Mon, Wed - Thu: 12:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Fri - Sat: 12:00 pm - 11:00 pm
Sun: 11:00 am - 7:00 pm

Happy duckies leaving the place with full tummies.

Was in the mood to walk so we hopped over to Bugis!  Living on the edge and walking next to speeding buses.

I got this crop top from Bugis Village!  I love it so much that I've worn it twice in 3 days.  For those close to me, you'd know that I really dislike repeating outfits or wearing items on close days, so this is kind of a huge deal for me.  I just love the cut and the colour so much!  PU leather shorts are from a little store in Barcelona, Spain  :D

Our search for yogurt turned up futile so we, like the neighbourhood kids we are, ducked into McDonalds for some sundaes.  Didn't finish mine but managed to swirl it into a huge goop of melted ice cream.  Huda was quite affronted that the first thing I did was to happily swirl my ice cream.

Also managed to catch Huda laughing on camera.

Thank you for all the shots you've taken for me all these years; hope you like at least one of them in this string!!!  LOL.  I've tried my best.  :3

Then I had to leave for my driving lesson so we bade each other farewell.  Really really really can't explain my love for this lady but somehow every (rare) occasion that we see each other we just chat incessantly and we can just understand each other really well.  Two aspects that frequently pop up in our conversations are race and gender.  Gender gets us pretty depressed, but we didn't talk much about that yesterday.  We do talk about race quite a lot thou, because, well, look at us, one of us is a Chinese and the other a Malay.  But here we are, best friends since god knows when, 10 years ago?

I don't think I've ever truly written about this in my blog, but Huda and I always get the strangest stares when we're out on the streets.  I suppose we were less immune to it, when we were younger, because we were both clad in uniforms and sans-personal-style.  Now that we're older, I always rock the glam makeup look (i.e. a lot of makeup) and crop tops and she always rocks her tudung and crazy badges.  You'd think living in Singapore, people would be more open-minded to the idea of two different girls of different races being best friends, however, sometimes, when we're laughing away in the most carefree manner just taking our walks around town, we get stared at a lot.  Being from different races, we both have exceedingly different experiences and face different demands and expectations.  However, we are both female, we are both daughters and sisters, we are both of university education.  We are both living in Singapore, in this tiny country full of narrow-minded people.  I cherish every single open-minded person I meet her, and genuinely, Huda is one special individual!  So those are many similar aspects, and hence we do share similar experiences.  Even if we don't, the two of us are willing to hold proper conversations about the things that are different, and try to understand the reasons behind the differences.  So while race is an important factor, being in Singapore, it kind of also isn't - get what I mean?

I think perhaps our love for Nsync connects us more than anything else.  HAHAAHAHAHAHAHAH

I'm just really glad that she's in my life and she's by my side with me, soaring to greater heights!  OH THE LEVEL OF CHEESE FROM YESTERDAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Gawd I feel so happy.  Meeting more individuals who'll make me even happier in a bit!   YAYZX

Love,
Pamela
