Haven't been listening to new music recently, but noticed this particular track in Laura Jones' Movement May '13 podcast. Brilliant thing to wake up to.
So all I've been doing these past 3 weeks is eating.
A lot.
Accompanied my parents to Ikea one day, and I had a headache so that is angst that you detect on my miserable face. I realised I quite like to coordinate my makeup to my outfit - this day's was mermaid inspired, I used turquoise and blue on my eyes!
Fishtail braids were tied in the car heh.
With handsome Papa whose frames are newly bought!

Pops and Momsy deep in thought over the suitability of the bookshelf
Pretty mommy!
I am wearing MAC's
Cherish on my lips, if anyone is interested. (:
Backseat company: boxes
We headed over to
Swee Choon Dim Sum Restaurant for dinner!
Along the way, I was scolded by my mom for swearing too much. And I had a mini tantrum and wanted to go home. Luckily, calm Papa made it better with his nonchalance and we managed to get seated without further drama. I haven't had the best control over my temper lately, and that day my headache was building up to a monstrous roar in my head so I was miffed. Family arguments are the worst, but there's always that one person who manages to keep her/his cool and smooth over the situation.
What is it that they say? Blood will always be thicker than water.
Well, sentimental kosh aside, look at what the three of us had ordered!!!!
THE LONG LIST OF FOOD ITEMS. O_O I was just happily ticking off what I could remember were really good dishes and they, having not been at Swee Choon before, just agreed with whatever I said. LOL.
Swee Choon's red bean paste dessert isn't fantastic, but I LOVE THIS DISH and I just order it whenever it's available! I'm not fond of red bean (the paste, the soup, the beans themselves), but I love the combination of flour and red bean deep fried!
This was really good - Brinjal with minced pork in Sichuan sauce.
I also really love deep fried wanton!! Mom didn't think too highly of this dish though - she said the prawns inside tasted too old.
But they both loved this dish!
Mee sua kueh. IT'S SO GOOD, the mee sua just melts in your mouth. It's really fragrant, and doesn't taste too oily either.
Of course, one can never have dimsum without ordering this:
LIU SHA BAOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Salted egg custard bun! :DDDDD Warm, golden oozing goodness.
Some of the other things we had! Didn't manage to take a picture of the
orh ni (yam paste dessert) but my parents really liked it. I'm a huge
orh ni fan but I don't like Swee Choon's one because it's too... yam-y for me. And that's exactly why my parents like it, because it tastes of freshly grated/mashed yam. I prefer the lousy factory made kind, the slightly more purplish one. Heh.
On to the second food place:
The Plain cafe! It's a Melbourne-styled cafe at Craig Road and the nearest MRT station is Tanjong Pagar.
Bryan's cappuccino!
Was in a pink sort of mood that day; had a pink sweater on, brought a pink sling bag, wore pink sandals, and had pink eyeshadow and lips!
Bryan in all his engineering faculty pride, LOL.
He'd ordered a
Dean's breakfast: poached eggs on melted cheese & vegemite
sourdough toast. I made him cut his poached egg for the customary oozing yolk photo because I didn't want to sacrifice mine HAHA.
I got a
Darling's eggs: poached eggs with ham, cheese & roma tomatoes
on sourdough toast. We both got half portions by the way, if you get the main portions there'll be two eggs! I also got iced coffee and I made the mistake of wanting it to be sweetened. For someone who'd started drinking black coffee since kindergarten, I really ought to stick to unsweetened coffee. But the coffee was really good!
I really liked my food by the way. Somehow the food tasted really clean and healthy -- not like how certain Egg's bennys would taste, too much of everything causing the taste to be overwhelming or too
jelat. The combination of the lean ham, melted cheese and moist tomatoes with eggy bits was very yummy and refreshing. The atmosphere at The Plain was nice as well, really relaxing and feel-good. The servers are very very friendly; all of them greet you once you walk into the cafe, which might scare certain people, but for someone like me who really appreciates good service and friendly faces, it was nice. :D While taking your order they're also very casual and.. AT EASE. Ah yes, those were the words I was searching for. It really puts you, as a customer, at ease, as well! Bryan said some people complain about how loud the background music is, but to be honest it didn't bother me much - I didn't really notice it.
And onwards to the third food place:
PastaJ at Kuan FoodCourt (it's more of a coffeeshop) at the end of Keong Saik Road. As the name signals, PastaJ sells mostly pastas. It's more of a fusion style, tweaked to local palates, rather than traditional Italian cuisine.
The owner is SO friendly and he knows his food so well it's incredible to be served by him. I never look down on coffeeshop food because I do love myself some ol' fashioned local dishes, and in some coffeeshops certain hidden gems can be found, and PastaJ is definitely amongst them.
Our starter soup:
Bollywood Pumpkin Soup. Because I have a slight allergy to seafood, John (the owner) took away the prawns and gave us more soup!
It was very nice and hearty - real good comfort on a chilly day. It didn't really have much of a pumpkin taste though, tasted more like a very light curry!
He recommended this to me -
Caramel Carnivore. I am a HUGE fan of onions so I was really looking forward to this!
When this arrived I was blown away by how huge the portion was O_O The caramelised onions were sweet and made the entire dish very flavourful. I really liked sucking on the pork bones as well - it's where all the flavours are!
Bryan got this -
Seafood Laksa Pasta.
Just looking at this makes my allergies act up. Look at the size of that squid! John's really very generous with the ingredients.

I kept uncovering more and more meat underneath all that pasta. For 8.90$, this dish is really worth more than its price!
He's also very proud of his
homemade pesto!
I was given a little to try. IT IS SO FRESH, I could taste the basil so clearly. It cut through very nicely. I think the balance of the parmesan and olive oil is reaaaaaally good.
I knew I wasn't going to be able to finish my main course, so I gave about half to Bryan HAHAHAHAHA. I had to save space for dessert!
Pandan ice cream with glorious, glorious gula melaka syrup drizzled all over - and a nice dash of chopped almonds on top. I really liked that the ice cream itself wasn't too sweet, because it allowed for the mild fragrance of the pandan to permeate through - and my sweet tooth was satisfied by the gula melaka. It (it's palm sugar by the way, Bryan thought it was coconut syrup -_- ) really brought out the fragrance of the pandan!
Ah.
I had initially wanted to get the creme brulee but he'd run out of them. I'll certainly be back to try that! Bryan said John lets his customers use the blowtorch to burn the sugar themselves LOL. He also changes up his menu every once in awhile so you might be in for a surprise when you go!
Hope y'all enjoyed this entry! Give these places a go if you're bored with whatever you've been having last week!
