LingSoc Social Event and Saveur !

HAVE Y'ALL BEEN SEEING THIS AROUND, IN CAMPUS, IN SINGAPORE---?

Krispy Kreme has arrived in Singapore!!!

Last Friday, they were giving out 1000 (I think? I'm not really sure of the numbers!) free ones at Central Forum in NUS :D B went to join the queues and got one for me wahahahah.

I also skipped my weekly Friday gym session that day (after that 200-calorie doughnut, I should have gone instead HMM) because the LingSoc was having an event!

Welcome to Word-Play! Some of us were gathered to play some board and card games. I know, we aren't too creative when it comes to naming things, but as proven by that night's activities, we are pretty innovative when it comes to words.

Started off with Charades with the whole room, after a round of introductions!

We had a lovely mix of year 1s to year 4s (and beyond ahem ahem), and Divya's friends who weren't EL majors were so nice to support her (:

It was pretty funny looking at Jian Gang gesturing away because he is SO SYSTEMATIC it makes one laugh.

I also received a roomful of applause when I managed to guess Stella's 9-word question after she gestured the second last word -- I knew you were trouble when you walked in !! But I had to clarify that I don't listen to Taylor Swift and only knew the song from all the goat remixes hahahahahahaaa.

Then, we split up into little groups and played different games. I think there were Uglydoll, Saboteur and Monopoly but I was really keen on Taboo heh. GIRLS VS. BOYS!!

LOL the expression on Jian Gang's face is priceless. Photo grabbed from Dat's FB, thanks Dat! (:

Initially, the girls were really losing out because WHAT THE HELL, THE BOYS REALLY HAVE A TIGHT KNIT COMMUNITY AND LINGO OF THEIR OWN BECAUSE OF NS!??! For instance, for "wisdom teeth", they were saying "Oh you'll try to get this removed in NS if you can because it's free". Also, Joachim got the word "steam" and I guess the taboo words would probably be "evaporate", "vapour", or "train" but he didn't even go along those lines, he immediately said "Okay if I see a hot girl then I what?"

Jian Gang's immediate response was "STEAM"

D: D: D: the other girls and I were all like...... what just happened?!?! Lmao. And as it went on, our minds steadily got dirtier and dirtier hahahahaa with Divya's "like to suck on this dark red thing" for "vampire" and Joachim's "I have bulging _" and "white liquid". I swear our minds are in the gutter!

I think the highlight for me was when I was trying to get my groupmates to guess the word "boast" and I went "If I say I have big boobs, it's a _?", and someone yelled "LIE" The entire group just burst out laughing like craaaaazy. Time to face the (small) truth, pamela ng

:3

Well it was extremely fun playing Taboo with fellow EL majors because people'd be saying stuff like "this is a synonym of", "okay this is a compound noun" and "collocation collocation people". When we divided it by gender lines it was even more fun. When the girls complained about the guys having their own lingo and Jian Gang was saying "Shouldn't y'all be employing Women's language right now to have an edge over us" I was all like "but women's language supposedly involves not being decisive, asking a lot of questions, beating around the bush and hedging which isn't what we want to achieve right now because of the time-limit!!" But I guess when I needed my group to guess "roots" and I went "I need to dye my hair soon, my what is showing?" that was an in-group thing for girls because fewer guys dye their hair?? :x

SO MUCH LOVE FOR THESE PEOPLE!

Alyssa, Joanne (first time meeting her!!), and Manda (: (: (:

A bunch of us then went on for supper hahahahahah as if coffee eclairs, mooncakes, and nachos with cheese weren't enough. :x

Was really nice spending some time speaking to some of the year 4s whom I don't really speak to very often, which is odd because we've been in the same major for four years and taken quite a few classes together but I guess we never had the opportunity to work together. This is the reason why we need a Lingsoc, for more opportunities to hang out and get to know each other! (: Such a support system is really valuable and as I always proclaim, having Jianrong as a senior (and AWESOME FRIEND) when I was a lost sheep in year 1 really helped!

:D 'twas an awesome Friday night!

//

Moving onto something else entirely, one Sunday night, Bryan brought me out to Saveur at Purvis Street for dinner. (: I was pretty excited because I'd heard really good reviews from friends and the WWW!

Saveur's Pasta
"A signature of Saveur's, pasta tossed with chilli oil, fine-chopped Japanese konbu & sakura ebi with minced pork sauce"

This cost 4.90$ and it was really good! The chilli oil was just a light coating over the noodles and it was very yummy.

"Duck leg confit, homemade mashed potato, sauteed shitake mushroom, orange segments & orange infused natural jus"

This dish was highly anticipated. :D And it really did not disappoint! The duck skin was crisp and flavourful. The duck meat was also moist and very well marinated. If you know me, you'd know I hate eating potato but I lapped up every last bit of this mashed potato because it was so creamy and fluffy. (': Love eating good food!!

Bryan got chicken for his main! As taken from Saveur's website, it is a "roulade of chicken thigh stuffed with foie gras-infused chicken farce, creamy basmati rice & parmesan sauce"

This cost 9.90$. I really liked the creamy basmati rice and the chicken was moist. I still preferred my duck confit though!

For dessert we shared a creme brulee! This had coffee cream beneath it and berries on top of the caramelised layer. It was a good dessert, but the coffee taste did not sit too well with my taste buds after my lovely duck confit, as the refreshing coffee taste clashed with the creaminess of the mash and the marinade of the duck. I think a normal creme brulee would have been better. (: Nevertheless, it was good.

My first visit to Saveur was reaaaaaaally good. The food is very yummy, and for its prices, very cost-worthy! Do give it a visit if you can; they have an outlet at Purvis Street and another at Far East Plaza, each with different promotions and specials. (:

I end my short entry with some Gui Boratto, because really, everyone ought to have some Gui Boratto in their lives.

so soothing, calming and... beautiful

I think today will be a better day (:
