Went on a three generation-outing a few weeks back, during my 9 day week break from my second exam to my last exam.
Had western food at my uncle's western food stall in Hougang before heading out! It's called the 5 Star Corner western food stall (I know, pretty cheesy name, but still, he's good). I rarely order the dish you see above - the chicken chop - because I don't like beans and fries, so I usually get black pepper chicken, which comes on a grill with black pepper sauce instead of brown sauce on a sizzling hot plate and replace my baked potato and mixed vegetables with ONIONS. A lot of onions. Hehe
It's quite cute how a few of my friends who stay in hougang or serangoon know the place as the ah beng western food stall but... They're all very friendly!! The guys working there I mean. They like to tease me (one just told me my bangs are really ugly and I should stick to my old hairstyle lmao), but it's all in good fun. Try to look past their tattoos yeah? It's located at 805 Hougang Central if you're interested to try it out! Opens till 10.30pm daily.
Momsy, granny and I! At the MRT station waiting for the train. We look really alike, don't we? Three generations of cuties, as I like to put it ahahahahaha.
Finally reached Sentosa!
It was a warm and dry day, so I felt really sleepy. Coupled with the fact that I couldn't bloody sleep the previous night, again.
Mommy and granny! I was the stipulated photographer of the day, as you can tell.
Had to walk past another exhibition before reaching the SEA Aquarium and it was about the Silk Road and what was unique in all the countries it passed, if I remember correctly. But I felt like the props were really badly made and looked quite fake.
Playing with the Guess the Spice turning thing. We had to match the plant to the spice which wasn't easy for me but of course, supremely easy for my granny and mom.
Finally!
Through the great blue lenses
My eyes were peeled for things like this. See, this happens in nature as well! Let's be more open-minded, yes?
THIS IS A SQUID. I never thought a squid looked like this. I'm only familiar with the Ika that comes on a sushi platter. Or is this a cuttlefish? Are they the same? I'm confused.
Mangroves are pretty useful! Pity we haven't any anymore in Singapore.
Can you spot the dolphin?
I think the jellyfish were the highlight of our trip! It was eerily calming staring at their top buttons bellowing out and getting sucked back in again.
Hehe I particularly like this series of photos because it follows how Mommy and Granny were following the fish as they swum
This was at the viewing panel, which is apparently the greatest one in the world! According to a certain Guinness world record notice at the side, anyway.
The sting rays were impressive; they were massive, they somehow had a nonchalant expression on, just sweeping across the sea beds in great lengths
Throughout our walk around all the tanks, my mom and I were keeping an eye out for the clownfish. "Where's Nemo ah?" AND WE FINALLY FOUND HIM!
Strategically placed towards the end of the walk.
All the parents were saying "There's Nemo!" to their children. Come to think of it, that was what my mom said to me as well. Gosh am I still a kid? I think it's been 10 years since the film was released!
Came across this which was really cool as well - because of how populated the area in which they stayed, the mother fish hides her babies in her mouth when there are incoming predators.
Finally reached the sharks!!
I'm actually really afraid of sharks because I think they look extremely menacing with their little beady eyes. And those jaws! I guess popular culture hasn't helped as well with all those films having been made with the sharks as villains.
Still pretty cool to see them up close with a thick glass panel separating us, though.
A hammerhead shark!
Some colourful fishes which species I have no clue.
To be honest I was prepared just to spend a nice day with my granny and mom; I didn't expect too much from the aquarium! Was nice to watch fishes swimming about and reading certain information about those which I were interested in, but that's pretty much the extent of it - watching fishes swimming around. I was however, more intrigued with observing the visitors rather than the fishes! To be more specific, I was observing how visitors were using their electronic devices. For starters, everyone had SOMETHING. A cellphone, a compact camera, a huge DSLR, an iPad, a video-recorder, just something. Perhaps only people like my grandma didn't have an electronic device, but that's not really due to age - she's not tech savvy, but there are people her age who can use such devices easily. I was confused as to why certain visitors were rushing from tank to tank snapping photos of the fishes, even glaring at others who were blocking their way, without actually looking at the fishes. I'm not judging them; everyone's experiences are different - if they get their value and satisfaction from having many photos while I get mine from reading information, it's cool. I was just really reminded of what I studied in Cultural Studies regarding how everyone's experiences are MEDIATED. It's as if we can't experience something, we can't feel the event, if we don't snap a photo of it.
Why do we have to snap photos? Are memories not enough? Will the photos aid in us remembering? So many questions just from a trip to Sentosa, sigh I blame Baudrillard for all his "There is no real, there is only the simulacra" LOL I think only Zhiwei will get it!!
Well on to the day itself, we decided to make our trip worthwhile and after getting a bite at the Malaysian food street (where I had lor mee, it was delish), we ventured further out.
Spotted some bright flowers!
The most precious ladies to me in the world (:
Wanted to trek down the nature walk but it had already closed by 1745!
Momsy suggested the cable car ride cheekily because she knows I'm deathly afraid of heights, but I was GAME FOR IT. It didn't occur to her that my granny was even more frightened and didn't wish to go up WAHAHAH #savedbymygranny
What I wore! My outfit had to pass decency standards as set by my mom, not kill me in the heat, and I was in a mood for denim. My dark grey denim vest is from Forever21, my ballet pink bandeau top is from New Look and my light grey highwaist denim shorts are from Modparade!
All in all I did enjoy myself at Sentosa! Not too exciting, but it was a nice day spent with the two ladies. Hope y'all had a nice read!
Till the next,
Pamela
