I AM GRADUATING TODAYYYYYYYYYYYYY.

Or more accurately, my convocation's going to be at 8PM tonight at the NUS University Cultural Centre!  It's probably going to end at about 9.30PM.  Please come before (I'll be there at about 7.15PM) or after if you want to take photos with me!!!!!!!  :D

I actually don't really feel much toward graduation because I think it hasn't really sunk in.  I went to look at some photos from the last day of school in primary school, secondary school and junior college and those were really fun days.  Somehow those were less scary because I knew I was going on to another phase in my life, but those phases were fixed.  Decided by someone else for me, that is.  Now though, I'm on to face a whole new world with absolutely no clue what's in store for me.  I'm pretty glad I'm graduating though, thinking on it - almost a year ago, I was this close to quitting school because of a traumatic experience.  I could have died.  Thank goodness friends and family helped me pull through.  I'm still not out of the thick yet, but hey, at least I didn't slit my wrists.  Plus I'm graduating!  (Yes I know, this was meant to be a happy post)

Feeling a little nervous about nothing yet everything in general, because I'm the first in the family to get a college degree and I don't have a family member to consult regarding inane things like what to wear beneath one's academic dress.  Will a tee and ripped shorts suffice?

I kid.

Goodnight

What metaphor is this?  Life is a story?  The source domain is stories and the target domain is life.  LOLOL too much mugging

14 APRIL IS THE DAY: HONOURS THESIS SUBMISSION

[wrote the paragraph below last night, as in Sunday night, but left it undone... I'm continuing now!]

I'm in Hong Sui Sen Memorial Library (that's the biz library to you NUS schoolmates) revising for my last exam, but I must say it's more of an attempt than actually conquering the material.  It's partly because I'm a little sleepy, but it's partly because I've just had dinner and need to wind down for a bit!  I've decided to blog since I've a backlog of photos.

I also feel that why I'm semi-reluctant to revise for my last examination is because I'm done with my THESIS and that really made me feel like I'm done with the last year of my university life.  :DDD  That day really was a glorious day.  I think the start of thesis submission begins with getting your thesis printed and then bound.  For me, I had made plans with some of the other EL majors to get ours done at Queensway; we'd agreed to meet at 5pm plus.  However, I left the writing of my abstract and acknowledgments till the very end, and that took quite some time!  So I was rushing like mad, and in the end my doting Papa sent me to Queensway.  (':  #TOUCHED  We even stayed in the car for some time after we'd parked because I was just trying to calm myself down and reading through the paper, trying to spot any errors.  In the end I just had to let it go and then we headed upstairs to find Melcher, Jun Yong and Gang waiting for their respective papers!  I handed over my paper to the lady and sat down with them, chatting away with nervous energy.  Papa was really cute and went about entertaining himself, even discovering this gem:

Katong laksa!  Was so yummy and the cockles tasted really fresh.  Had this for dinner  *slurps*  So yeah.  That was my Sunday night, rushing about to get my thesis printed!  Papa was really sweet and sent me back home, where upon return, I slumped in my seat and started watching endless Youtube videos.

On 14th April, Monday afternoon itself!

Eunice and I just had to take a photo outside of Talib's office (he wasn't in his office) because we like to joke that though we are his supervisees, we are not allowed into his office; all our consultations were conducted in The Deck, LOL.  I personally don't mind having consults in the canteen because it is less stressful but it's just funny to say that we're denied access to his office hahahahaahha

Made everyone who was there take a model-esque shot, but only the right half of the photo achieved it hahahaha  :p

CONGRATS FRIENDS, WE SURVIVED!!

Informal shot!  :D

Took individual shots!

I wrote a thank note on Facebook (adding in some stuff here):

I'm probably the latest person to post about this but, hurrah, I've submitted my thesis!

I think I'll probably never shake off this niggling feeling - "you haven't done your best", says the voice in my head - and my eyes were brimming with tears while standing at the ELL department office counter, telling Ngui Jian Gang that I was crying to sleep last night because I felt like I was going to do very badly for this thesis, until he very wryly said "Well, I told myself not to think too much about it" and flipped his thesis open to show me left-aligned page numbers. I wasn't laughing at his misery, but that definitely made me stop to think about these negative feelings I was having.

From a 0-word count in Week 7, to a 12,379 words in Week 13; the multiple difficulties I faced: trying to understand psychoanalysis applied to film (what is up with that, by the way), getting nowhere with my data analysis, and just thinking about whether all of this work was going to amount to ANYTHING at all.  The thesis underwent an extreme makeover in friggin' WEEK 12 (I think Neo Zhi Wei can attest to this) because I could not pinpoint what was wrong with it, and while I might not be entirely happy with it and am slightly disappointed in myself, I guess one thing I can be proud of is that I didn't give up, and be amazed that I even had the courage to embark on this journey.

Thanks for all the encouragement, help, care and concern you've given me, my dear family and friends!

Thank you Papa and Momma Ng for comforting me at 2am when you hear me sobbing in my room, and for loving me. Thank you for making sure that my basic needs are fulfilled, and that I was in the best condition to write this thesis. Thank you Kor and Di for turning down your edm when I needed to sleep.

To Zhiwei, I'M UTTERLY GLAD I SAT NEXT TO YOU 7 YEARS AGO; I love you so much my seating partner, you have no idea how much your friendship means to me.  Thank you so so so much for reading through my thesis three times, and for providing such constructive comments that allowed me to structure my thesis properly.  I'm indebted to you for the support you have given me over all these years, and for your help! (':

Thank you Flea Ng, Mrs Twit and Andy Phua I am grateful for all your love for these past years, and Bryan Tong for being my personal cheerleader.  An elaboration:  Thank you Hudidoo for hearing me out, helping me clear out my cluttered thoughts, and for the random texts of encouragement!  To Flea, for having not a clue what my thesis entails, but trying to help your best by googling stuff about voice-over narration for me and giving me Yahoo answers!  LOL.  Thank you Boss for your eternal faith in me  (:  Of course, bb dearest who never gave up on me when I desperately wanted to give up on myself - thank you for giving me strength to finish this.

Thank you Bert for that card you gave me - your words have stayed with me and made me much stronger.  I've also grown really close to you and I'm just grateful for your company through these two semesters.  Thank you for having faith in me and for always being so encouraging!  :D

Melcher Tan I feel like you've become my bro or something?! Jian gang too: Thank you for your support for these past years since year 1: I would have never made it through last semester without you two, and I say that in utter solemnness.

To Yihan Nee For being the person that you are, and for the random pearls of wisdom you give me.

To Jianrong Yu Lim Jun Yong Joachim J. Lai Thank you for proofreading (to some extent or another) my thesis, and for being so damn awesome. Talking to you all about anything is always a joy (minus the bad puns), and I am always happy to spend time with you all. The same goes out to: Jody Wanchun Moritza Lim Divya Somasundaram Joji Mendoza Alyssa Tan Rowland Anthony Imperial Joy Yui Eunice Yip Wang Esther Sinyee Vong Joanne Wong Nicholas Ng I wouldn't have achieved this without your constant cheers and encouragement.

I feel like this has been a really long FB post already, and should actually be on my blog instead, but just indulge me a little longer, won't you? To everyone who has helped in one way or another, or made me feel better in this process of writing my thesis, I LOVE YOU VERY MUCH!

[/end]

Joji and I!  (:  We've made it!!  Time for more steamboat where I can teach you to eat scallops??  LOL

We all thought it'd be a pass the thesis over the counter and leave sort of thing, but because of the different majors (EL, EN and TS), there was a queue!  Lmao.  I busied myself with taking photos and helping others to as well!

With Rophie and Eunice!

With Joy and Alyssa!  These two dears are so sweeeeeet; thank you so much for all those texts of support!!

Mor and Junyong!  Both of them were under Prof Lazar's supervision with really interesting thesis topics!  I'm really sure both of them are gonna be awesome teachers teehee

Melcher and Rowland with their supervisor, Prof Vincent Ooi!  Anyone interested in corpus linguistics, these are the people to look for haha.

For most of my peers, even after we had handed up our theses, we still had other schoolwork to do...

Case in point: Bert and Gang with their SFG presentation!  Their presentation was on sweets though, so I think that was at least enjoyable, to research about, I mean.

For Melcher, Brinda, Filzah and I, we still had our GEK1058 presentation!  Annoyingly, this exam is only on the 7th.  HONESTLY IT'S MY ONLY PAPER AND IT'S ONLY 30% SO I'M REALLY TIRED OF REVISING.  I can't wait for it to be over, really.  Our group had a nice time doing our project on caregivers' perceptions and attitudes of language in Singapore though!

Us with our prof, Dr Stephanie Lo!  I quite liked her classes on minority languages and metaphors  :D

After that, went to the Year 3s' unofficial honours room to hang around:

After some mucking about, met Bryan and Ashley and we went back to their place to celebrate their mom's birthday!

Here's Aunty Slyvia with her huge birthday cake, made for her by her friend!

Meet the Tongs  :DDDDD I had Thom with me so I helped to take photos but Aunty Slyvia asked me to join them as well, and Ash went to set up the tripod hahahaa felt so paiseh was so mafan

Check out the interior!  Have you ever heard of surprise-inside cakes?  Well this was definitely one of them!  We were so surprised when Aunty Slyvia cut through the cake, because we've never really seen vertically coated interiors before.  We had quite a discussion about how the cake could have been made; I initially thought her friend had somehow inserted the chocolate ganache into the cake batter, because I dismissed the idea of inserting a knife vertically into the cake and cutting it in a parallel manner to its circumference!  Bryan was certain that was right though, and he even drew a diagram to convince us.  In the end he googled for the method, and he was right!  Here's a link to i am baker's website for her tutorial if you're interested: CLICK  :D  For this particular cake, Aunty Slyvia's friend spent a grueling 5 hours on it!  Such dedication, so sweet of her, right!  (:

The flowers I bought for Bryan!  He's trying to dry 'em out.  I love receiving flowers because on top of liking flowers, I actually enjoy the process of observing them slowly wilt more.

Was really glad that I'd handed up my thesis that I was jumping about doing strange poses

I patiently await the day I can do a pull-up HAHAHAHAHAHA

My quirky and exhausted self at the end of the day

It was a really awesome day.  (:  It was equal parts relief and happiness for me, I think, to finally submit my thesis.  I'm glad I had the chance to write about film and linguistics!  It really has been quite the tedious journey, and I've really learnt a lot about academic writing from this process.  Besides just these technical skills, I've also learnt to support my friends, and also allow myself to be supported from time to time.  (:

Patiently await my other entries!!!  I promise to bring Thom out more so them photos will be clearer.  (:

MUCH LOVE,
pamela

YEAR 4 SEM 1 WEEK 1

I'VE SURVIVED WEEK 1 OF SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Year 4 doesn't really feel any different from any other semesters, to be honest. Maybe I feel a slight pressure to behave in a more mature manner buttttttttttt I'm still jumping up and down excitedly when I bump into familiar faces. :DDD Missed school so much for the friends! :DD

And of course I've missed FASS deck's waffle (': The auntie is still as cute as ever! First day of school would be odd without having deck waffle. Heh.

Was so happy to see Bert and Melcher in class!!! :D Amanda, and Nat as well :D Just awesome to have classes with the fellow EL majors again.

Got lost on the second day of the week; I totally spaced and thought LT 32 was LT27 -- I'm taking Reporting Stats in the Media as a breadth module! IT'S AT BLOODY 8AM EVERY TUESDAY AND FRIDAY ): I couldn't sleep until 2plus and only got 3 hours of sleep. Haha. Every single semester, I'd get lost somewhere for sure, it's as if it HAS to happen.

Went to the computer centre for the second time in my academic life (the first being... sometime during o week in year 1?!?! D: Can't remember, think we were brought there to do module bidding or something haha) and spotted this on the computer screen:

HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA MAYBE I HAVE A DAMN BAD SENSE OF HUMOUR BUT I COULDN'T STOP LAUGHING AT THIS. HOW COULD THEY HAVE REDUCED THE FIERCE SNARL OF A HANDSOME WOLF TO THIS?!?!?!

HEHEHEHEHEHEHE

Bumped into Fauzi at the CC tooooooo it's so awesome to have all the secondary school guys at uni now. :D All I need now is for Yihan and Andy to magically appear as well and my life'd be complete.

Had lemon chicken rice with long beans at engineering canteen for lunch! This only cost $2.30

And this cost $2.80! It's pretty cheap, and yummy too. Maybe I ought to eat at Engineering more

Then on a whim, I went and got a haircut.

Do you like it? :D I haven't had hair this short since... secondary school! It was a good 4-5 inches chopped off. I quite like it, hehe.

No more tangled up split ends :DDDDDDD

Took a short nap, then woke up to make this!

Hindbærsnitter (raspberry cookie) ((': It's my favourite Danish cookie. I followed the recipe from here! It was to commemorate the first year anniversary of my flying off to Aarhus, Denmark. I remember the first hindbærsnitter I had - it was at Dale's Cafe at Aarhus Universitet after Mette and I had picked up my flat keys from the administration! I remember almost getting a chocolate bun when I saw this rectangular cookie sprinkled with rainbow coloured balls stacked on a plate, on display for all patrons to see. The burst of sweetness alongside the buttery crust, yet balanced by the tartness of the raspberry in my mouth was soooooo good I fell in love then and there.

Packed a few smaller bite-sized ones to school for the friends to try (:

Daddy dearest gave me a lift to school the next day because I'd a lot to carry :D Thankyou Daddyyyyy!

Decided on a sweet and demure makeup to go with my newly cut hair! The peter pan collar with polka dots felt a little schoolgirl preppy as well, so I decided to keep it within a sweet theme.

My Introduction to Cultural Studies class at U-town ended really early so I gave myself a treat - a nice Starbucks brunch with a huge cuppa hot chocolate

It started pouring really heavily

Then I went for my Gender, Language and Text class -- I really love how Prof Hiramoto hasn't changed since I took her exposure module in Year 1 Sem 1 (: She's really nice and sweet!

Also walked around class asking a few people if they'd like to try the cookie I'd baked and those who did said they liked it! :D I'm so glad heh. Also, Edna's in the same class!! So glad for such awesome company.

On that day, someone turned 22!! :D

Check out what I'd gotten him for a present - a BOLSTER hahahahahahahaahah yes I seriously did. Well he mentioned he hadn't a bolster in hall so I went and bought one LOL.

Also got him a book from Kikki.K! The wrapper's from there as well isn't it SUPER CUTE!! *pukes rainbows

Happy birthday mister, hope you had an awesome day! :D

Spotted this at the Co-op the next day:

I'M CONSIDERING GETTING ONE!!!!!! To use in my cooking hahahahahaha. But to be honest I don't think I'll be able to cook often because the readings for level 4 modules are killer. O: *-*

Was exhausted after only day 3 of week 1.... I think it's because I just haven't been getting sufficient sleep!

Day 4: I HAD LUNCH WITH THE LOVELIEST DARLING MS NEOOOOOOO. :DDDDDDDD Was brilliant to chat incessantly about EVERYTHING with her, though it was really a hurried lunch because I couldn't wake up in time *-* Sorry missy! And we didn't take a photo together noooooooooooo. Let's do lunch again this week!

Also: bumped into Daphne, Fiona and Shamini whilst at Deck!!! Was like a hyper kid and kept bouncing around in excitement heh. Also saw Jaspy!!!!

ootd failed attempt #1

WIWT(o School)! The pink headband's from Forever 21, pink bandeau crop top thingy's from New Look (which I got in London, not sure if they sell it in SG!) ASOS skater skirt in grey and my boring black flats're from Rubi. :D

Went for dinner at Holland V and tried this for the first time:

Vietnamese pho! It was really good albeit a bit too salty for my liking. For 12.95$ there was a generous amount of beef given. (:

Looking mega drained *-* Eyeliner was horribly smudged because I was using Silkygirl pencil liner instead of my usual Nars eyeshadow (yes I use a black eyeshadow to line my eyes! I feel that it smudges less than pencil liners and gel liners, but that's only for my own eyelids - you should try out all them possible options and decide on the best for yourself!) Went home and slept immediately!

On Fridayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Was waiting for Bryan at U-town and decided to take photos because I was wearing such little makeup!! Wearing MAC's Cherish on my lips by the way. It's a feat for me to have achieved during just week 1; the amount of makeup on my face is negatively correlated to the number of days into semester, usually. Hehe.

I quite like wearing little makeup! Makes me look more freshfaced haha.

But I was doing so for a particular reason:

TO THE GYM, I WAS HEADED O_O for the first time in my entire existence!!! I've never been to the gym before hahahahaha. Have only exercised at the park, at the swimming pool, or within the confines of my home. Hence the pout, because I was quite shocked at the number of people at U-town gym just at... 10.30am on a Friday morning?!?! *-*

Bryan was my personal trainer for the day!! :D He was actually really sweet and patient because I was being a total durrbrain not knowing where to put my hands, how to use the machines and also I am just basically very weak and can't lift very heavy stuff hahahahahahaha. He was very supportive and made sure I finish my 8 times per set because most of the time, by the 6th I'd wanted to stop. I also kept getting distracted by the guys lifting dumbbells and making beastfaces at their reflections in the mirror HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA. They looked as if they were headed to war LOOOOOL. I also noticed that it's the girls at the running tracks and the guys who were doing the lifting! Why is that so???

ANYWAY I SURVIVEDDDD YAY

Had eggs because my personal trainer for the day said "it's best to eat protein within 30 minutes after working out" HOKAY MISTER

Then we went to the pool!! :D Other than us two Asians, the rest were all exchange students lazing about. It was good because I was in my bikini and didn't feel out of place hehe.

I must fully make use of school facilities whilst I'm still a student!!! WHO WANTS TO BE MY GYM AND POOL BUDDIES!?!?!?! :p I'm currently feeling pretty sore in my arms, upper back, thigh and ass muscles though. LOL.

Bumped into Nithiyaaaaaaaaaaaaaa and I feel like I ought to organise a 4/3 outing......... Hahahahahahahahahaha.

On Saturday, Melcher, Jian Gang and I had a meeting to prepare for our Gender presentation next week! I was the earliest though I only slept at 4AM wahahahahaha.

Pretty Ayano and I!

Love these two deepdeep, best major mates one could ask for!!

T.S stood for TELLY SEX because our presentation's on telephone sex operators!!! Thank God for interesting readings.

Jiangang's S sign looks soooo awkwardly made hahahahahaha

Thank you Ayano for getting green tea kitkat for Jian Gang and I! :DD

That concludes my first week back in school! 'twas awesome to meet everyone again. It's going to be a difficult and busy semester but I refuse to let anything get me down because I'm stronger than this. I absolutely refuse to REGRET anything and think about What Ifs so let's work hard together okay, everyone? (:

Much love, and I wish thee grow wiser and better with each passing day!

.

Giving something - be it an experience, an object, an emotion - a name brings it into existence; it gives it a sense of legitimisation, a sense of realness. While I don't deny that what I, or what we feel is real, I simply think it isn't fair to expect such a level of dedication when I myself can't commit. And while I sound pretty matter of fact here, I'm ashamed to say I'm actually just... Scared. I'm scared of becoming someone I don't like. And I'm scared of causing pain to someone who doesn't deserve it.

So yeah. To hell with labels.
